about

1. water flowing downhill
2. anadromos

once I had a dream that I was water, flowing downhill
liquid, I was the very essence of transparency and formlessness
lucid, the warm sunlight shone through me
I could see through myself to the green trees
and the hills beyond, and at the same time I knew
that I was also music, flowing free and unfettered
no ladders and no rules (I was freshly out of school)
and then I awoke, a youth in my lover's bed
"pshaw! I ain't no piece of dried up meat!" I said,
and dove again into the river (a fool)
swam past sunken trees
through caves and canyons and cascading falls
past rusting ships and barges
to where the river meets the sea
and slipped over the edge
down
into
the darkness
~
I know I'm moving
but I feel as though I'm suspended in a silent vastness
an endless arc of heavenly blue
splashes of light!
fish!
millions of them, swirling like a flock of silvery birds
and chasing them is a mighty cetacean, with a voice
like a thousand hunting horns calling across a thousand miles
and I am filled with awe
this is the song Fionn heard when he sucked his thumb
a baby in the womb, turning in time
I want to go home, and begin to wiggle and swim
out of the deep
past the lonely light house (forever calling "stay away")
up, up, up past rolling rocks, past life and death
the current strong, I am stronger
it seems impossible but I'm running up waterfalls
this is what I was meant to do
I leap...

it's peaceful here
whatever I once was is gently washed away
I am of no more substance than the glittering sunlight
little bugs are dancing in circles over me
waltzing on the water
once I had a dream that I was water
flowing downhill
